Transition Work

I visited David Murphy's independent show at the Bartha Contemporary this summer in preparation for my A-Level studies in photography. The reason I chose this exhibition was because it included an interview with the artist and you are able to explore Murphy's interest in glass as a creative process to his interest in magnification. The visit taught me how angles at which Murphy positioned his work alters the appearance of sunlight, colour and position of the shadows. What interested me the most was the sheet glass each work was made out of and how Murphy's work has the qualities of glass-making traditionally speaking, for example one of his pieces was lead and held within a custom brass frame which was hinged to the wall in the Bartha Contemporary Gallery.

This experimentation i have photographed displays Donald Trump's head slightly peaking out underneath a photograph and hides his entire figure. This depicts a stealthy image in our heads as it can be perceived that he is making an effort not to be seen, therefore this could represent what goes on behind closed doors and how Donald Trump is overly secretive and perhaps the mistrust people have is based on his irrational decisions and secretive unpredictable manner.
This experimentation began when i discovered a photo of people being photographed during their everyday life and most of these people were travelling to and from work. I ripped random pages out of a magazine and placed them on top of each photo except one. I did this to represent the hidden prison-like lifestyle people have nowadays and how many people are restricted but struggle to realize it for example a 9-5 job that people do their whole life from the age of 18 that they don't actually enjoy.
The image seen in the experimentation i photographed... i put a ring in the middle of a page which created a shadow which took the form of a heart. This represented the love inside of marriage. In my experimentation i ripped this image up, the inconsistent irrational ripping represents anger and chaos, the heart is also ripped down the middle representing a broken heart and overall a person that cannot cope with the heart break which creates the chaos and anger. The large white background portrays this persons loneliness due to the amount of space left around the image.

This experimentation is made of four major events in history which consists of the USA landing on the moon, a key individual from the Yalta Conference, the Berlin airlift and an atomic explosion in the cold war. The smoke from the atomic explosion looks like a face with a cloud of smoke above which could represent stress or confusion of the individual at the conference.
In this experimentation i wanted the perfume to be the center image and the outline where the light was shining (which was a square shape) i placed pictures which created a shadow on top of the picture and added depth which made the main image look even more important.
Lastly this experimentation is based on the current event and worldwide dilemma known as 'Corona Virus' . I put three main items that almost everyone in the world tries to have on them whenever they go out and also a layer of ripped toilet paper underneath the items to represent the shortage of toilet roll during lockdown. I wanted to emphasise the extent our lives have changed in my photography because not so long ago most people wouldn't dream of having any of these items on them when travelling and now it is mandatory (for example) to wear a mask when travelling and inside any shops or businesses and also to sanitise your hands before you enter and after you leave shops, businesses, etc. If the population were told about the new regulations and rules before the virus spiralled out of control many people would be shocked and most would find it absurd and especially troubled by the new term 'social distancing' , which is hard not to see or hear while going about your daily life nowadays.
